The channel 11 puzzle

"NewsChannel 11" is NBC, KCBD, and it appears as 11.1 on your TV, but its signal now travels on UHF 35. The station actually using physical channel 11 is FOX 34, KJTV.

It wasn't always this way. Station records show KCBD broadcasting on VHF 11 until 2025 and KJTV on UHF 35 until 2025. The two stations then traded places, so each moved onto the other's old frequency. Gray Media runs both stations from the same studios at 98th Street and University Avenue. It won FCC approval to buy KJTV outright in May 2026.

For viewers, the practical effect is that FOX is now the Lubbock network station that needs a VHF antenna. NBC, on UHF 35, comes in on almost anything. If FOX 34 vanished from your lineup after 2025, rescan with an antenna rated for VHF-High. The FCC's DTV reception map shows how strong KJTV's VHF signal should be at your address.

Why the numbers don't match the signal

Digital TV uses "virtual" channel numbers, which let stations keep the numbers viewers knew from analog days. Your TV reads the station's virtual number from its signal and shows that, whatever frequency the signal uses.

• CBS 13 broadcast on analog channel 13 from 1952 to 2009.
• NBC 11 was on analog channel 11 from 1953 to 2009.
• PBS 5 was on analog channel 5 from 1962 to 2009.
• ABC 28 and FOX 34 were analog UHF stations on 28 and 34.

When the analog signals switched off in 2009, the numbers stayed. That's why every Lubbock network number is older than most of its viewers.

When to rescan in Lubbock

Several Lubbock stations have moved frequencies since 2018, and each move meant a rescan for antenna viewers.

1. 2018: PBS 5 left UHF 39 for UHF 25, and the CW 22 left UHF 43 for UHF 23.
2. 2019: CBS 13 left UHF 40 for UHF 31.
3. 2025: NBC 11 and FOX 34 swapped VHF 11 and UHF 35.

A rescan is also worth doing after moving the antenna, adding an amplifier, or any time a channel goes missing. On most TVs it's under Settings, then Channels, then Auto scan or Channel scan. Run it with the antenna connected and aimed, and wait for it to finish. Each station sends several channels in one signal, numbered .2, .3 and so on.

Cable and streaming numbers

On cable or streaming, these stations sit wherever the provider puts them, not at their broadcast numbers. Optimum, Lubbock's cable company since the Suddenlink rename in 2022, publishes its own lineup. The IPTVZ panel catalogue of October 16, 2026 names them by network and number. You'll see "NBC 11 Lubbock TX (KCBD)," "CBS 13 Lubbock TX (KLBK)," "ABC 28 (KAMC) Lubbock TX" and "FOX 34 Lubbock TX (KJTV)," plus Telemundo from Lubbock.
