IPTV vs cable, streaming and OTT
Here’s how IPTV compares with cable, streaming services and OTT, in plain terms:
IPTV vs cable
Cable sends TV down a cable line to a box you rent; IPTV sends the same kind of live channels over your internet to an app on a device you already own. A cable or satellite package with box rental and fees often runs past $100 a month, while a typical IPTV plan worked out to about $6 to $10 a month when we compared 15 US providers in October 2026. The trade-off: IPTV depends on your internet, so test it at peak time first.
IPTV vs streaming services
Netflix and similar services stream shows on demand. Live TV streaming services such as YouTube TV and Sling carry network channels in their own apps; YouTube TV’s base plan listed at $82.99 a month and Sling Orange at $45.99 in September 2026 (Cord Cutters News). IPTV services also carry live channels, but you watch them in a player app of your choice, usually for less. Our guide to IPTV vs YouTube TV and Sling compares them side by side.
IPTV vs OTT
Strictly, IPTV is TV sent over a provider’s own managed network, and OTT (“over the top”) is video sent over the open internet. Today most services called IPTV run over the open internet and are watched through a player app, so in practice they are a kind of OTT. Our explainer covers IPTV vs cable, satellite and streaming in more depth, and the IPTV glossary explains the terms.
IPTV guide questions
What is IPTV in simple terms?
IPTV is TV delivered over the internet instead of a cable line, a dish or an antenna. A player app on your TV, streaming stick or phone shows the channels and a TV guide.
Do I need a special box for IPTV?
No. IPTV runs in an app on a Firestick, an Android TV or Google TV device, an Apple TV, many Smart TVs, phones and computers. Dedicated IPTV boxes such as Formuler and MAG exist too, but you don’t need one.
Is IPTV better than cable?
It usually costs less and works on devices you already own, without a cable box or a contract. Cable can be more predictable on a weak internet connection. Test IPTV with a free trial on your own internet before you cancel cable.
Is IPTV the same as streaming?
IPTV is a kind of streaming focused on live TV channels with a guide. Services like Netflix stream on-demand shows; live TV streaming services such as YouTube TV and Sling sit in between.
