Rio Grande Valley TV Stations: Every Local Channel, Where It Moved and How to Watch
The Rio Grande Valley's main TV stations are ABC 5 KRGV, NBC 23 KVEO, CBS on 23.2, FOX 67, The CW on 4.1, PBS 21, Telemundo 40 KTLM and Univision 48 KNVO. They serve McAllen, Harlingen, Weslaco and Brownsville as one TV market. Stations from Reynosa and Matamoros add Mexico's networks for free.
If you last scanned your TV channels a few years ago, the Valley has moved under your feet. CBS left channel 4 in 2020 and now lives on NBC's second channel. The CW took over channel 4 in September 2026. FOX shows up as 67, even though its main license says 60, and PBS came back on a channel that used to be The CW. This guide lists every Valley station as it is in late 2026, where the towers stand and how to watch without cable.

Where CBS, The CW, FOX and PBS went
Four of the Valley's networks have changed channels since 2012, which is why so many old channel lists are wrong.
- FOX moved to 67 in 2012. On August 13, 2012, FOX moved to Entravision's 67.1, carried by low-power stations in McAllen and Brownsville. Its main license, KFXV in Harlingen, uses virtual channel 60 and simulcasts the same FOX feed.
- CBS left channel 4 in 2020. At midnight on January 28, 2020, CBS moved from KGBT 4 to KVEO's second channel, 23.2. It came out of a legal settlement between Nexstar and Sinclair, and Nexstar now owns both stations.
- PBS came back in 2020. The Valley lost its PBS station in 2018, when KMBH-TV's transmitter was damaged in a power surge. PBS returned in 2020 on a subchannel of KCWT-CD, now called KMBH-CD.
- The CW moved to channel 4 in 2026. On September 1, 2026, The CW left KCWT-CD and moved to KGBT 4.1, which became a CW-owned station. Channel 21 now carries PBS on both 21.1 and 21.4.
If your TV still shows CBS on channel 4, it's time for a fresh channel scan. Our guide to Harlingen TV stations covers channel 4's long history in more detail.
Where the Valley's towers are
Most Valley stations broadcast from two clusters: near Santa Maria and La Feria in western Cameron County, and near Donna in Hidalgo County. Telemundo is the outlier, far to the west near Rio Grande City.
- Santa Maria and La Feria: ABC 5 KRGV, NBC and CBS 23 KVEO, FOX's KFXV and PBS 21. Their coordinates put them about 8 to 11 miles west-southwest of Harlingen.
- Near Donna, on Farm to Market Road 493: Univision 48 KNVO, UniMás and FOX's McAllen repeater.
- Near Rio Grande City: Telemundo 40 KTLM, about 33 miles northwest of McAllen, with repeaters in McAllen, Harlingen and Weslaco.
One tower is gone. KGBT's La Feria tower, 1,337 feet tall by Nexstar's count, was taken down on March 8, 2024, after support cables snapped. If channel 4 has looked different since then, rescanning picks up whatever signal KGBT uses now.

Antenna tips for the Valley
Valley antennas need VHF for ABC 5 and the right direction for your city. KRGV broadcasts on VHF channel 13, the only main Valley station that does, so a UHF-only antenna can miss it.
| From | Santa Maria / La Feria towers | Donna towers | Telemundo, Rio Grande City |
|---|---|---|---|
| McAllen | About 26 mi east-southeast | About 14 mi southeast | About 33 mi northwest |
| Weslaco | About 10 mi east | About 7 mi southwest | About 48 mi west-northwest |
| Harlingen | About 9 mi west-southwest | About 24 mi west-southwest | About 63 mi west-northwest |
| Brownsville | About 25 mi west-northwest | About 38 mi west-northwest | About 83 mi west-northwest |
Distances and directions we computed from each station's listed coordinates to each city center. Telemundo's own tower is far from the eastern Valley, so viewers in Harlingen and Brownsville usually get it from its local repeaters. Check your exact address on the FCC's DTV reception map.
Stations from Reynosa and Matamoros
Mexican stations from Reynosa and Matamoros reach much of the Valley over the air, free. Mexico uses the same ATSC digital standard as the US, so your TV decodes them without extra equipment.
| Channel | Network | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1.1 | Azteca Uno | XHREY Reynosa and XHMTA Matamoros |
| 2.1, 2.2 | Las Estrellas, Canal 5 | XHTAM |
| 6.1 | Multimedios | XHVTV Matamoros |
| 7.1 | Azteca 7 | XHOR Matamoros |
| 8.1 | Televisa "Vallevisión" | XHAB Matamoros |
| 9.1 | Las Estrellas | XERV Reynosa |
| 13.1 | Imagen TV | XHCTRM Reynosa |
What Vallevisión, Azteca 7 and the rest actually air, and what paid Spanish packages cost, is in our Valley Spanish and Mexican TV guide.
Valley TV history in four facts
- Channel 4 came first. KGBT signed on October 4, 1953, as KGBS-TV, the first TV station on the US side of the Valley.
- The Johnsons owned half of channel 5. KRGV signed on April 10, 1954. Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson's broadcasting company held half of it from 1956 to 1961.
- KRGV made network history. On April 12, 1976, it became the first NBC affiliate to switch to ABC.
- Spanish TV grew from both sides. Univision's KNVO signed on in 1992. Telemundo's KTLM followed in 1999, taking the network from a Mexican station whose signal barely reached the western Valley.
Sports in the Valley
For Valley sports fans, the NFL is on CBS 23.2 and FOX 67, and UTRGV football streams on ESPN+.
- UTRGV Vaqueros football plays all of its 2026 games on ESPN+, per the university. That needs ESPN Select at $13.99 a month or ESPN Unlimited at $31.99.
- The NFL: Cowboys and Texans games air on the Valley's CBS and FOX channels, depending on the week.
- Liga MX plays on Univision 48, Telemundo 40 and their sister networks, and on Mexican channels like Azteca 7.

- An antenna, $25 to $60 once, for every station on this page.
- Streaming live TV, where YouTube TV is the best-known at $82.99 a month. Its channel finder tells you, per ZIP, whether KRGV and KVEO are included.
