Leaving Spectrum in McAllen and Brownsville: What It Costs and What You Keep

By

Leaving Spectrum TV in McAllen or Brownsville can cut a first-year TV bill from about $1,509 to $74.99. That's with Spectrum internet kept and the TV moved to IPTVZ. Spectrum TV starts at $40 for TV Lite and $100 for Signature in year one, plus a surcharge of about $21 to $26.

Spectrum is the cable company for most of the Valley, from Mission to Brownsville. Whether dropping its TV service is easy depends a lot on where you live. Harlingen sits close to the towers, and McAllen has Reynosa's stations next door. Brownsville is far enough from the main transmitters to make an antenna work for its money. This guide prices Spectrum TV in the Valley, goes city by city, and covers what you keep when you cancel.

Spectrum TV prices in McAllen and the Valley

Spectrum's Valley TV plans range from $25 for the Spanish TV Latino plan to $145 for Stream TV VIP, all first-year prices. We took them from spectrum.com's general offer page on October 17, 2026. The offer for a specific Valley address can be different.

Month 13 brings the regular rate, unless a price lock or a new deal applies. Our guide to what cable costs a month explains how fees stack up on a typical bill.

The surcharge for stations an antenna gets free

Spectrum's Broadcast TV Surcharge pays for carrying KRGV, KVEO, FOX 67 and the other Valley stations, the same stations an antenna picks up for nothing. Independent 2026 estimates put it at about $21 to $26 a month; The Senior List lists $25.75.

Our finding: At $25.75, the surcharge costs $309 a year. In Harlingen, about 9 miles from the main towers, that's money for signals a $30 indoor antenna can catch. In Brownsville, 25 miles out, the surcharge buys a bit more convenience, but a $60 roof antenna still pays for itself in under three months.

City by city: is an antenna enough?

Before cancelling, check whether an antenna will cover the Valley locals at your address. Here's the honest picture, from distances we computed to each city center.

  • Harlingen: easy. The main towers are about 8 to 11 miles west-southwest. A VHF-capable indoor antenna usually gets ABC 5, NBC and CBS 23, FOX and PBS. Our Harlingen TV guide has details.
  • McAllen, Mission, Edinburg: good. Univision's tower near Donna is about 14 miles away, the main cluster about 26 miles east-southeast, and Reynosa's Mexican stations are just across the river.
  • Weslaco: easy, about 10 miles from the main towers and 7 from Donna.
  • Brownsville: harder. The main towers are about 25 miles west-northwest, so plan on an attic or roof antenna with VHF for ABC 5. FOX 67 broadcasts from inside the city. See our Brownsville TV guide.

For Telemundo 40, whose main tower is near Rio Grande City, most of the eastern Valley relies on its local repeaters.

Try it before you call Spectrum

The IPTVZ free trial runs on the Spectrum internet you already have. Spend a day on KRGV, Telemundo 40 and Vallevisión, then decide. No card.

What you keep and what you give up

Dropping Spectrum TV keeps every Valley station available and trades the cable DVR for cheaper, more flexible viewing.

  • You keep every Valley network station. None of them belongs to Spectrum; they're free broadcasts that other services carry too.
  • You gain, with IPTVZ, the Reynosa and Matamoros lineups and local stations from across the US, handy for Winter Texans.
  • You give up Spectrum's DVR and receivers. IPTVZ offers 1 to 3 days of catch-up on 485 US channels instead.
  • You keep Spectrum internet, unless you switch providers too.

In our October 16, 2026 catalogue export, the Valley's five network affiliates sit next to 51 Mexican border feeds from Reynosa and Matamoros. Univision 48 KNVO is on the panel too. Our guide to IPTV in the Rio Grande Valley covers setup.

Valley internet without Spectrum TV

Most Valley households keep Spectrum internet after cancelling TV, but other providers serve parts of the Valley. IPTV needs about 15 Mbps per HD screen, so speed is rarely the problem.

  • Vexus Fiber, a newer fiber network, is rolling out across McAllen, Mission, Edinburg and Harlingen; check its map for your street.
  • AT&T and the cooperative VTX1 serve some neighborhoods.
  • T-Mobile and Verizon 5G home internet work where indoor 5G is strong.

Look up your address on the FCC National Broadband Map before you switch. Get the new connection working first, then cancel the old one.

How to cancel Spectrum TV, in order

  1. Test the replacement on every TV you use, on a weeknight and during a game.
  2. Check your account for a price lock or a promotion that's about to end.
  3. Contact Spectrum by phone or chat and remove only the TV service.
  4. Return each receiver at a Spectrum store, and keep the receipt.
  5. Read the next statement for any leftover TV, surcharge or equipment line.

Our IPTV vs cable guide covers the bigger decision if you're still weighing it.
