How Much Is Cable a Month in 2026? Package Prices, Fees and the Real Bill

By

Cable TV costs most US households about $125 to $147 a month in 2026, once fees and taxes are on the bill. The advertised package price is usually $40 to $175. The gap between the two is fees: a broadcast TV charge of $20 to $30, sports fees, box rentals and taxes.

There's a reason nobody can quite answer "how much is cable?" The price on the website and the price on the bill are different numbers. Cable companies like it that way. In August 2026, bill-pay company doxo found the median cable bill was only $4 a month below the median electric bill. So we looked at both. Below: what packages cost to start, what the fees add, and a full year against streaming and IPTV.

How much is cable a month in 2026: a median bill of $125 according to doxo, an average of $147 in CableTV.com's survey, packages from $40 to $175, and fees of $20 to $40 a month on top

How much is cable a month in 2026?

The typical US cable or satellite bill in 2026 is $125 to $147 a month, depending on how it's measured. Both numbers come from 2026 studies, and both include more than the package price.

  • $125 median. doxo's 2026 Cable & Satellite Report puts the median at $125 a month. That's $4 below the median electric bill, Telecompetitor reported on August 28, 2026. It also found 74% of US households still pay a cable or satellite bill.
  • $147 average. CableTV.com's State of TV report, from a survey of 1,000 US adults in January 2026, found an average bill of $147. Its respondents' average streaming bill was $30.

A median is the middle bill, so half of households pay more. An average gets pulled up by big bills with premium channels and sports tiers. Either way, at $125 a month, cable comes to about $1,500 a year. As doxo's chief executive put it, nobody sits down and decides to spend that much on television.

What cable packages cost by provider

Advertised cable and satellite packages run from $40 to $175 a month before fees. Here is what the biggest providers listed in October 2026:

Spectrum prices from spectrum.com on October 17, 2026, and DirecTV prices from DirecTV's satellite page on October 19, 2026. Xfinity shows its cable TV packages only after you enter an address. Its NOW TV streaming plan costs $20 a month with Xfinity internet. It skips most local stations and ESPN, as we found in our Houston Xfinity review.

The fees between the ad and the bill

Fees usually add $20 to $40 a month to a cable bill, and the biggest one pays for your local channels. These are the lines to look for:

  1. Broadcast TV fee. Cable companies charge it to cover what local ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC stations charge them. Xfinity's rose from $26.35 to $30.25 a month on December 20, 2025, in a Comcast rate card filed in Howard County, Maryland. Spectrum's Broadcast TV Surcharge runs about $21 to $26.
  2. Regional sports fee. A charge for local sports networks. DirecTV's satellite plans list one of up to $23.99 a month. Xfinity's ran $2 to $14.40 in the same Maryland rate card, depending on the package.
  3. TV access or service fee. DirecTV adds a $10 monthly TV Access Fee to every satellite package.
  4. Box and DVR rentals. A monthly charge per receiver, multiplied by every TV in the house.
  5. One-time charges. DirecTV satellite has a $49.95 activation fee, and cancelling early costs $20 for each month left on the agreement.
  6. Taxes and franchise fees, which vary by city.

None of these fees is a government tax, although the names often sound like one. Xfinity's own price-change page says of its Broadcast TV Fee: "It's not government-mandated." It also says the fee may rise during a promotional term.

A real cable bill, line by line

Add the fees to a mid-tier package and a "$100" plan becomes a $126 to $134 bill before boxes and taxes. Here are two examples built from the published numbers:

Chart of two cable bills in 2026: Spectrum Stream TV Signature $100 plus a $25.75 Broadcast TV Surcharge is $125.75, and DirecTV Choice $99.99 plus a $10 TV Access Fee and a regional sports fee of up to $23.99 is $133.98, both before box fees and taxes

Local channels fee$25.75 Broadcast TV SurchargeIncluded
Access or sports fee-$10 TV Access Fee + up to $23.99 sports fee
Before boxes and taxes$125.75Up to $133.98

The $25.75 surcharge is The Senior List's 2026 figure for Spectrum. Add a box for a second TV and local taxes, and both bills land right around CableTV.com's $147 average.

Our finding: The fees alone, $25.75 on Spectrum or up to $33.99 on DirecTV, are four to five times IPTVZ's monthly cost on a 12-month plan, $6.25. Over a year, the fees on DirecTV Choice reach $407.88 before a single box is rented.

Why the bill rises after year one

Most cable prices are promotional, so the same package often costs more from month 13 or month 25. Spectrum's TV prices are first-year prices. DirecTV's satellite prices hold for a 24-month agreement, under what it calls a 2-year price guarantee.

The fees can rise even inside a promotion. Xfinity's Broadcast TV Fee jumped $3.90 a month in December 2025. Its pricing page warns that the fee "may increase during your promotional term." So a locked package price doesn't mean a locked bill.

That's why the honest way to compare cable with anything else is over two years, not one month. Our guide to leaving Spectrum in Austin shows how fast year one and year two drift apart for a real household.

How much of it you actually watch

Cable customers watch about 8% of the channels they pay for, according to CableTV.com. On a 150-channel package, that's about a dozen channels.

The same 2026 survey found the top reason people keep cable is live sports, cited by 36%. Nearly half of cable subscribers said they would cancel if the price rose again. And 82% of cable customers also pay for at least one streaming service, so many households now pay for TV twice.

That's the real question behind "how much is cable a month." It's what you pay for the 12 channels you watch, and whether you can get those 12 cheaper.

Cable vs streaming vs IPTV over a year

At the median bill, a year of cable costs about $1,500, more than double a year of most live-TV streaming plans. The chart compares a year of each.

Bar chart of a year of TV in 2026: cable at the CableTV.com average $1,764, cable at the doxo median $1,500, YouTube TV $995.88, YouTube TV Entertainment $659.88, Sling Orange $551.88, and IPTVZ 12 months on 3 devices $149.99

Streaming and IPTV need home internet, which you likely pay for already with cable. Our ranking of the cheapest live TV with local channels goes through every option with locals. The IPTV vs cable pillar guide compares the full cost of switching.

How to lower your cable bill

Even if you keep cable, you can usually take $20 to $50 off the bill with one phone call and some housekeeping.

  1. Read every fee line. Write down the package price, each fee and each box, so you know what you're negotiating.
  2. Return boxes you don't use. A bedroom TV that gets watched twice a month may be costing you $10 or more.
  3. Call before the promotion ends. Ask for the current new-customer price or a retention offer. Mention the cheaper alternative you're considering.
  4. Drop a tier. If your sports team isn't on the regional sports network, the sports tier and its fee may not earn their keep.
  5. Go internet-only. Keep the internet, cancel the TV, and replace it with an antenna plus a streaming or IPTV plan. Our explainer on what IPTV is and how it works covers the second half.
