Spanish-Language TV in San Antonio: Univision, Telemundo and How to Watch
San Antonio's Spanish-language TV stations are Univision on 41 (KWEX), Telemundo on 60 (KVDA), UniMás on 17 (KNIC) and Estrella TV on 10.1. All four are free with an antenna, and all broadcast on UHF, so they come in more easily than ABC 12. This guide covers each station, what an antenna will not give you, and what Spanish TV costs without cable.
San Antonio also has a claim no other city has. US Spanish-language television started here, in 1955, on the station that is now Univision 41. Seventy years later, the evening news, the Sunday soccer and the telenovela the whole house plans dinner around still share one remote here.

KWEX and KNIC are owned by TelevisaUnivision and share the Univision Broadcast Center in northwest San Antonio. KVDA is owned by NBCUniversal's Telemundo Station Group. It has been a Telemundo station since it signed on in 1989, per the KVDA station record.
The subchannels add a few more Spanish options. Telemundo's 60.2 carries TeleXitos, and Univision's 41.3 carries Nosey. Our guide to San Antonio channel numbers lists every subchannel in the market.
Where US Spanish-language TV began
Univision 41 started life on June 10, 1955, as KCOR-TV, the first Spanish-language commercial television station in the US, per the KWEX-DT station record. Its owner, Raoul Cortez, had already built the first full-time Spanish-language radio station in the country, in San Antonio.
The station was also the first in South Texas to broadcast on UHF. In 1961 it was sold to a group that included Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta and Rene Anselmo, and it became KWEX-TV. It was a charter station of the Spanish International Network, the network that later became Univision.
So when you tune to 41 tonight, you are watching the oldest branch of the Spanish-language TV family tree in the US. Not bad for a channel number most people only know from the evening news.
Free with an antenna, and easier than KSAT
All four Spanish-language stations in San Antonio broadcast on UHF, the band that small indoor antennas handle best. That is the opposite of ABC 12, which now arrives on KLRN's VHF 9 signal and breaks up for many viewers.
Our finding: We checked the broadcast band of every Spanish-language station in the market. Univision 41 (UHF 24), Telemundo 60 (UHF 15), UniMás 17 (UHF 18) and Estrella TV 10.1 (UHF 36) are all UHF. So a basic flat antenna that struggles with KSAT will usually pull in the Spanish stations fine.
Direction matters too. Univision and Telemundo transmit from near Elmendorf, about 17 miles southeast of downtown, along with most English-language stations. UniMás transmits from Timberwood Park, north of the city. That is why Univision also appears as 17.2: if you live on the north side, KNIC's signal may reach you more easily than KWEX's.
Estrella TV on 10.1 is a low-power station, so its signal covers a smaller area. If it does not appear after a scan, you may simply be outside its reach. Our San Antonio TV stations guide explains antenna placement and rescanning.
Local news in Spanish
Univision 41 runs the biggest Spanish-language local newsroom in San Antonio, with about 21 hours of local newscasts a week, according to its station record. It also produces Despierta San Antonio, a series of local interview segments.
Telemundo 60 also produces local Spanish-language news. Both stations stream news clips on their websites and apps. For the live newscast on the big screen, though, you still need the channel itself, by antenna, a TV service or IPTV.
What the antenna does not give you
An antenna gives you the four local stations, but not the Spanish cable networks. These are the ones San Antonio households most often miss after cutting cable:
- Galavisión, Univision's cable network, with comedy, novelas and Liga MX soccer.
- Spanish sports: TUDN, FOX Deportes and ESPN Deportes, for Liga MX, international soccer, boxing and more.
- News: CNN en Español.
- Networks from Mexico, such as Las Estrellas, Azteca Uno and Canal 5.
Soccer is usually the deciding factor. Many of the biggest Liga MX and international matches air on TUDN or FOX Deportes, which no antenna receives.

Which option fits your home?
- You only watch the local Spanish stations: an antenna is enough, and it is easier here than for the English-language ABC 12.
- You want the soccer: you need TUDN and FOX Deportes, which means a TV service or IPTV.
- You are a bilingual household: pick one service that carries both the English and the Spanish locals, so nobody fights over two remotes.
- You want everything from one company with a technician: Spectrum's Latino plans or DIRECTV's Spanish packages are the traditional route.
