Austin Channel Numbers: What Channel Is CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX?

By

In Austin, CBS is channel 42 (KEYE, "CBS Austin"), ABC is 24 (KVUE), NBC is 36 (KXAN) and FOX is 7 (KTBC). PBS is 18 (KLRU), The CW is 54 (KNVA), Univision is 62 and Telemundo is 42.2. Here is every Austin number, the subchannels behind it, and the numbers that turn up in more than one place.

Austin's dial looks like someone shuffled it in 1995. Strictly speaking, someone did: that summer FOX and CBS swapped channels, and the city has been explaining it to newcomers ever since. Add Telemundo living on the CBS station and Univision answering to three different numbers, and a printed TV guide stops helping. This page is the answer key.

Austin channel numbers list

For each Austin network, this table shows the number your TV displays, the station that owns it and the signals that carry it. It is built from the RabbitEars Austin listing and each station's Wikipedia record, checked October 19, 2026.

A virtual channel is the number your TV displays and the one people quote, like FOX 7. The "Regular signal" column gives the frequency your antenna actually locks onto, which can be far from that number. NextGen TV is the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard, and the "NextGen copy" column shows which frequency carries each station's version of it for NextGen-capable TVs and tuners. "Not confirmed" means we have not matched that station to our panel lineup yet, which does not prove it is missing.

What channel is CBS in Austin?

CBS is channel 42 in Austin, station KEYE, branded CBS Austin. Its signal is UHF 34, sent from Buckman Mountain in the West Austin hills, which most antennas receive without trouble. The same programming also goes out as 42.1 on KBVO-CD's UHF 31 signal, a handy second chance if 34 is weak where you live.

KEYE was not always CBS. It signed on in 1983 as independent KBVO-TV, carried FOX from 1986, and became the CBS station in July 1995, when FOX moved to channel 7, per the KEYE-TV station record. Its subchannels are Telemundo on 42.2, Charge! on 42.3 and Comet on 42.4. KEYE's tower also sends two of KBVO's channels, Bounce on 14.2 and Antenna TV on 14.3.

What channel is ABC in Austin?

ABC is channel 24, station KVUE. It has been Austin's ABC station since it signed on September 12, 1971, and it broadcasts on UHF 33, per the KVUE station record. KVUE is now part of Tegna, which belongs to Nexstar Media Group, the same company that owns KXAN.

KVUE runs more subchannels than anyone else in town: Estrella TV on 24.2, True Crime Network on 24.3, Quest on 24.4, The Nest on 24.5, Outlaw on 24.6, Busted on 24.7 and Shop LC on 24.8. All eight ride on the same UHF 33 signal, so they come and go together: if ABC 24 breaks up, Estrella TV and the rest will too. ABC 24 also carries most Longhorns games this season, as our Longhorns TV guide shows.

What channel is NBC in Austin?

NBC is channel 36, station KXAN. It broadcasts on UHF 21 and also goes out as 36.1 on KBVO-CD's UHF 31. KXAN signed on February 12, 1965, as KHFI-TV, Austin's second TV station, and has carried NBC since 1966, per the KXAN station record.

Its subchannels are Cozi TV on 36.2 and ION on 36.3, and its tower also carries KBVO's ION Plus on 14.4. One viewer near Parmer Lane and RM 620 in Northwest Austin kept losing KXAN, a common story where hills sit between a home and the towers. An antenna mounted high helps there.

What channel is FOX in Austin?

FOX is channel 7, station KTBC, branded FOX 7 Austin. It is the only big Austin network broadcasting on VHF, on VHF 7 from its own tower on Mount Larson. KTBC went on the air November 27, 1952, the first TV station in Central Texas, and carried CBS until July 1995, per the KTBC station record.

KTBC's subchannels are Movies! on 7.2, Buzzr on 7.3, MeTV on 7.4, Catchy Comedy on 7.5 and FOX Weather on 7.6. It also carries a copy of Univision as 62.11, which surprises people who find Univision on a FOX signal. The NextGen copy of FOX 7 travels on UHF 14 from KXLK-CD. If FOX 7 keeps dropping out on your antenna, our Austin TV stations guide explains the VHF fix.

What channel is PBS in Austin?

PBS is channel 18, station KLRU, branded Austin PBS. It broadcasts on UHF 22 from the same Buckman Mountain site as KVUE and KEYE. Its subchannels are Create on 18.2, PBS Encore on 18.3 and PBS Kids on 18.4.

KLRU started in 1979 as a satellite of San Antonio's KLRN and became fully independent in 1986, per the KLRU station record. It is also the station that produces Austin City Limits, the PBS music series, so channel 18 may be the most famous number on the Austin dial.

The CW on 54 and MyNetworkTV on 14

The CW is channel 54 in Austin, station KNVA, branded CW Austin. It broadcasts on UHF 23, with a copy on KBVO-CD's UHF 31. KNVA is owned by Vaughan Media and run by Nexstar alongside KXAN, per the KNVA station record. Its subchannels are Grit on 54.2, Laff on 54.3 and Defy TV on 54.4.

MyNetworkTV is on channel 14, station KBVO, an independent station with MyNetworkTV programming. Fun fact for Longhorns fans: the call letters stand for Bevo, the UT mascot. The main KBVO transmitter is licensed to Llano on UHF 27, and Austin viewers can also receive it from KBVO-CD on UHF 31 or as a copy on KNVA's UHF 23.

Both channels also reach the edges of the market through small relay stations in Round Rock, Georgetown, San Marcos, La Grange and Fredericksburg. Each relay sends 14.1 and 54.1 under the same numbers, so viewers there tune the usual channels.

Austin numbers that show up twice

In Austin, several channel numbers come from more than one transmitter. Stations send copies on each other's signals to reach more homes and to make room for NextGen TV. This table shows where the surprising numbers really come from.

Austin channel numbers and the transmitters that really send them: Univision on 62.1 from KAKW VHF 13 and KTFO-CD UHF 36, on 62.11 from FOX 7's VHF 7 and on 40.1; KBVO's 14.1 from UHF 27, 31 and 23; Bounce 14.2 and Antenna TV 14.3 from KEYE UHF 34; ION Plus 14.4 from KXAN UHF 21; and copies of NBC 36, CBS 42 and CW 54 on KBVO-CD UHF 31

Our finding: Univision Austin can appear on your TV as 62.1, 40.1 and 62.11, from three different transmitters. That explains a common puzzle: if your scan lists Univision more than once, nothing is broken. Keep whichever copy plays best and delete the others from your favorites. The same goes for KBVO's 14.1, which can arrive on three signals.

The KBVO-CD copies on UHF 31 are worth knowing about. They carry NBC 36, CBS 42 and CW 54 again, so if one of the main signals is weak at your address, the scan may still find a working copy under the same number.

Spanish-language and other free channels

Austin's Spanish-language channels are Univision 62, UniMás 62.2, Telemundo 42.2 and Estrella TV 24.2. Univision's other subchannels are ION Mystery on 62.4, Dabl on 62.5 and ION on 62.6. LATV is on low-power KVAT-LD, channel 17.

A few more free channels round out the dial:

  • TSTV on 32 (K32OJ-D), Texas Student Television. UT Austin owns it and students run it, which makes it one of only a handful of student-run, FCC-licensed TV stations in the country, per the K32OJ-D station record. Its 32.2 carries the audio of KVRX, the student radio station.
  • Daystar on 16 (KADT-LD), with Daystar Español on 16.2.
  • Low-power channels on 17, 19 and 20 (KVAT-LD, KGBS-CD and KADF-LD), with networks such as Heroes & Icons, Start TV, NTD America, Newsmax2 and beIN Sports Xtra.

Low-power stations cover a smaller area than the big networks, so they may not appear everywhere in the market. TSTV's transmitter, for example, stands near the UT campus rather than in the West Austin hills. If you live on campus, our guide to TV for UT Austin students covers dorm and apartment setups.

Why your Austin channel numbers changed

Most Austin channel changes come down to one of four causes.

  • Your TV is set to Cable instead of Antenna. Then it can find FOX 7 and little else, because VHF channels line up on both settings and UHF ones do not. One Austin viewer fixed exactly that and replied, "Oh my god that fixed it."
  • Your TV found duplicate copies. Univision, KBVO 14 and the KBVO-CD copies of NBC, CBS and CW can each appear more than once. A NextGen TV adds FOX 7 and Univision again from KXLK-CD.
  • A subchannel changed networks. That happens when stations sign new network deals. In July 2026 an Austin viewer noticed that one of KXAN's subchannels had swapped old sitcoms for crime dramas.
  • A weak signal dropped out. When a frequency fades, every channel on it goes too. Lose UHF 33 and all eight KVUE channels vanish at once.

Rescanning takes two minutes. In your TV's menu, find the channel setup (often under Settings, then Channels or Broadcasting), make sure the source says Antenna or Air, and start an automatic scan. Do it again whenever you move the antenna, and check the FCC reception map for the direction to aim from your street. If FOX 7 still won't stay put, our Texas antenna reception guide explains the VHF problem in detail.

Channel numbers on cable, streaming and IPTV

On cable and satellite, the provider chooses the numbers, so FOX 7 can sit on a completely different channel on your box, and the lineup can vary by package and neighborhood. On UT's campus cable, for example, TSTV sits on channel 15 instead of 32. Use your provider's on-screen guide or the lineup for your address. Thinking of dropping the box? Our guide to leaving Spectrum in Austin prices the switch.

Streaming services and IPTV mostly drop numbers and let you pick channels by name. On IPTVZ the Austin locals are listed as FOX 7 Austin (KTBC), ABC 24 Austin (KVUE), NBC 36 Austin (KXAN) and CBS 42 Austin (KEYE). Next to them sit Austin PBS (KLRU), CW Austin (KNVA), KBVO 14, Univision Austin, UniMás, Telemundo Austin and Spectrum News Austin. Type "Austin" into the search and they appear together.

Many of the subchannel networks are in the IPTVZ lineup as full national channels too: MeTV, Antenna TV, Comet, Cozi, Catchy Comedy, Charge!, Bounce, Grit, Laff, Buzzr, ION and FOX Weather. Because everything arrives over your internet connection, duplicate copies and rescans stop being your problem. The full IPTVZ channel list shows the rest, and our guide to IPTV in Austin covers what you need to get started.
